Major Threat

I don’t really know anything about the clothing store Forever 21. I’ve never bought clothing from them or even gawked through one of their windows. But I’m already starting to dislike them. They recently started selling shirts bearing the logo of hardcore legends Minor Threat. But they did it without Minor Threat's permission. Blatantly. And the shirt looks like it should really bear the name of some ‘80s hair metal band. Minor Threat’s logo is placed tastelessly on the forehead of some kind of menacing surfer girl with big aviator sunglasses. And this is all juxtaposed with some kind of checkerboard racecar pattern.

Minor Threat has never done any real merchandising but I’m sure they never would have allowed this. I just have to wonder why. What profit could they make by victimizing this cult indie band? Did they think anyone would actually buy these shirts? (I have to make an inference here but the Minor Threat shirt seems totally incongruous with the bikini-clad girl who graces the front page of their website leading me to believe that the kids who typically shop at Forever 21 wouldn’t really be that interested in Minor Threat.) And finally, did they think they would get away with this? Forever 21, you’re a giant corporation – you’re never going to be able to rip off anything and get away with it. People will notice.

I wouldn’t hesitate to call this an epic fail.

  1. That is ridiculous I can not believe any store could do something like that. I can not stand when stores sell merchandise for bands even with their permission. They should be smart enough to come up with their own ideas instead of selling other peoples. I also agree with you completely that this is the true definition of an epic fail.
