Rock Music

I really can’t say why I like Lil’ Wayne because I would never listen to so many of his contemporaries. And I really want to continue listening to him. It means I’m not too far gone to appreciate some kind of mainstream music. It means that there is someone out there trying to inject some taste back into pop music. But Lil’ Wayne seems to always be trying to shirk any kind of consistency. While I wasn’t too impressed with Tha Carter III a few tracks really stood out. “Mrs. Officer” still gets stuck in my head every time I hear it (is that lame?). But then he goes and makes a single like “Prom Queen.” This song really makes me question his artistic sensibilities, even his common sense. How can anyone hear this and not think Weezy is either joking, high, or just dumb? It sounds like a combination of 90’s nu metal and 80’s hair metal. I can even appreciate Auto-Tune in small doses for effect but this song makes me wonder whether he can actually sing without it.

Lil’ Wayne says he likes rock music but this makes me wonder how much rock music he has ever actually heard. Of course, he was integrated long enough into the hip hop scene to be able to do something new and interesting with the genre. But the fact is, he doesn’t know enough about rock music to avoid regurgitating several decades of tacky, worn out styles. His new “rock” album, Rebirth, has been pushed back from being released from April 7th to May 19th. Lil’ Wayne, you risk losing all of my respect if you release this album. Even more than that, you risk losing everyone’s respect. You just won four Grammies. You have the respect and adoration of a massive and diverse group of fans and critics. Don’t ruin that. Don’t make them think you’re stupid. If you just don’t release this album you can maintain the illusion of genius. Who knows, maybe you can recover and even start making great music again.
